Never get kernel newer than 2.6.32-42

Question 1

По-видимому, Ваша система пропускает метапакет, linux-image-generic. Какие получения по запросу в более новых версиях ядра. Для установки его работать

sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic

Это должно установить последнее доступное ядро, которое будет использоваться после перезагрузки.

Для удаления старых ядер и заголовков можно выполнить следующую команду или использовать другие пути, как описано в том, Как делают я удаляю старые версии ядра:

dpkg -l linux-* | awk '/^ii/{ print $2}' | grep -v -e `uname -r | cut -f1,2 -d"-"` | grep -e [0-9] | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

... и между прочим, нет ничего неправильно со столбцом справа.

Последний номер - уровень патча. Это не имеет ничего общего с версией.

Без надлежащей информации я скажу, что ядра ноутбуков имеют больше патчей, характерных для Ubuntu, чем ядра ПК (не то, чтобы это число зависело от Ubuntu).

Обе машины работают 2.6.32.

Последнее число действительно неважно для сравнения версий.
