Also tried compiling the dkms driver but getting the following error.

Это - очень старый драйвер, он не установит на Ubuntu 14.04. Можно установить драйвер этот путь:

sudo apt-get install git build-essential
git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git
cd rtlwifi_new
make
sudo make install
