Я нахожусь в 12.04 LTS и хочу перейти на 14.04.1 LTS. Сообщение об ошибке позволяет мне только закрыть, а при этом закрывает все средство обновления. из моих прошлых воспоминаний есть файл, который мне нужно удалить. Не могу вспомнить какой именно.

похоже, что существует проблема с Вашим списком пакета. Это может быть решено путем выполнения этой команды в терминале:
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
Это очистит кэш. Теперь выполненный
sudo apt-get update
Для обновления кэша снова. После этого попытайтесь обновить до 14,04 снова, чтобы видеть, работает ли это теперь!
